Rwanda

In 1994, one of the worst genocides in history occurred in Rwanda, in which almost 1 million people were murdered in the space of 100 days. The genocide was a climax of Belgian colonisation, in which two ethnic groups, the Hutus and Tutsis, were formally set apart and put against each other as a political strategy to control the county. Today, over a decade on, physical, psychological and emotional scars remain. Peter Vanderzaag’s (Director) brother Rob, his wife Kellie and their four children have relocated to Rwanda for several years, working with an organisation called Reach in providing trauma counselling. Rob in particular is facilitating training of locals in a form of counselling designed specifically for Rwanda’s unique circumstances of Post Traumatic Stress.

As well as this, the whole family is working on building housing, helping people start small businesses and bringing change to terrible conditions in orphanages across the country.

The personal connection and the incredible story of a family of six relocating to Africa to help with what has been a horrific injustice certainly captured 3fold, and our partnership helps to provide for the family’s living costs (they are in Rwanda on a purely volunteer basis) and provide resources for community projects.
